Where do I stick the mtl file? Am I correct in thinking that SEUK just supports obj ext?

I tried making a model with Google sketch-up, exported it as an obj file, a simple classic UFO saucer shape. Sadly it didn't display right in SEUK, shame really, as I find Google Sketch-up a joy to use. I will need to dig out my free FSX version of GMAX.

Thanx.

Hi matabhaine,

You are correct - the Shoot 'Em Up Kit doesn't use the mtl file at the moment. The information from the mtl file - and more - is set within the Material pane and so we don't currently use it.

I suspect the issue with the obj file is that the Shoot 'Em Up Kit expects models to be exported as triangles. I'm not very familiar with Google Sketch-Up, other than to know it's a nice modelling tool, and so I'm not sure what export options are available. But if it supports exporting as triangles then this should fix the issue. An alternative method would be to use Sketch Up for modelling and then use something like Blender for converting the file. I appreciate that this isn't ideal though.

We have support for more model formats coming soon as part of an engine update. We've had a lot of requests for FBX support but I'll also make sure Google sketch-up models are imported without the need for extra conversion steps.

Thanks,
John

Well, I found the triangulate

Well, I found the triangulate option in the export window pane; bottom right (silly me). I also had to select export 2 sided faces. My model though appears 2 inches away from the grid, any ideas.

My UFO looks just like the old movies :-)

Kind regards

Matt.

Model position

I'm glad you got the triangulation sorted and that your model is loading now. The Shoot 'Em Up Kit expects models to be centred and facing in the +Z direction. It looks like your model has been exported with the centre of the model set off to the side. There should be a way to centre the model in sketch-up before you export it.

Thanks,
Karen
