Hi Everyone,

We're in the process of creating some template games for the Shoot 'Em Up Kit. These can act as a starting point for a new project and help people get their games going a lot quicker.

I'd like to ask which shmup templates you think would be useful or important to include? My thoughts are mostly with older games such as Galaga, 1942, Space Harrier, Gyruss and Gradius. This is partly because newer games have additional specific mechanics and I just want to provide some basic starting-points for people.

Obviously the games named here are all protected by copyright and so the templates will be based on each game's basic style and will be using new and existing Shoot 'Em Up Kit assets. We will also create 2D and 3D versions of each game.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks,
John

I will think about some game templates and will come with some suggestions eventually. The list you give is already a good foundation.

Hi Michael,

I'm pleased you like the idea of template games.

You're suggestion of twin-stick shooters is excellent - thank you! I'd completely missed that important genre of the shoot 'em up family. It's now on the list. :)

Thanks,
John

I havn't messed with the physics engine yet-- if it was possible, A super mario brothers jumper would open up platforming in a big way.
Beyond that, if it was possible to do a contra jumper, that'd be a amazing.
I had thought that when I got some free time, I'd try and see if a castlevania mechanic was possible.

Hi Dpful,

The platform side-scroller is a nice idea - thank you! :)

Your suggestions have made me want to play Contra and Castlevania again. :D

Thanks again,
John

i think you could use a new or an existing template for 2 players cooperative game.
I would add a template like "Asteroids" to demonstrate zero gravity environnement and collision, thrust control and swap borders.
I would also add a "maniac shooter" template for people aiming for bullet hell games like "dondonpachi"
A last cool addition could be Gravity Power (Amiga) featuring gravity controls and destructible walls

Maniac Shooter!

I second Dijo's maniac shooter idea!
Mainly because it is a direction I want to pursue in my game, but obviously danmaku fans make out a huge part of the shooting game fanbase :)

Template Games

Hi Djio and Michael,

Thank you for your feedback.

Asteroids is an important shooter and the Shoot 'Em Up Kit certainly needs a template for this. It's quite tricky within the Kit at the moment to spawn smaller asteroids after you destroy a large one but we have plans to simplify this significantly. This feature will also open up procedural level generation, so we're quite excited about this. :)

A good maniac shooter / bullet hell / danmaku shooter will be great. We'll create a good selection of bullet patterns to choose from and adapt; and add a range of larger bullet sprites and models to go with the sub-genre.

Gravity Power is another great suggestion - thank you. :) I wasn't familiar with this game but I see elements of Thrust and Oids in there - and all with multiplayer support. I guess PixelJunk Shooter is a modern version of those.

Thank you for these excellent suggestions. I'm sure we'll enjoy putting together the templates for these. :D
