Hello again everyone,

Still doing some experimenting while I'm working on my latest shooter, and I discovered the following: I put text on the Main Menu, Attract 1, Attract 2, Attract 3, Story, Instructions, and Credits screens. Main Menu is set to Fire to Progress, but the other pages are not. Also, Main Menu has a page duration of 0 while all the others have a page duration of 2.

But what happens is, the only screens that are shown when you run the game and click fire to progress at the main menu are the Story page and the Instructions page -- the others are skipped. Another thing I noticed when I tried something a little different: When I set ALL the pages to Fire to Progress, you could see the Story and Instructions pages flash by really quickly as if the clicking of the fire button was repeated several times in a row (not giving the user the chance to read those screens).

Thoughts?

Okay, did some testing, and I think I'm starting to understand how this works a little better. Apologies to everyone who already knows this; I'm still learning the ins and outs.

The Attract 1/2/3 screens WILL show if there is a timed limit on the main menu, I see that now. And then the High Score screen too. But when the Main Menu is set to Fire to Progress, *that* is when it will go to the Instructions and Story, then the game will start.

I got it so that the Main Menu is set to 3 seconds as well as Fire to Progress. If I wait three seconds, it goes to Attract 1/2/3, then High Scores, then it loops back to the Main Menu. If I click fire, it goes to story, instructions, then the game starts.

Interesting!

Actually though, when does Credits show?

Seems like I've got the problem narrowed down even further. The core issue is that clicking on a text item or sprite to either start a new game, continue an existing game, or go back to the main menu is causing issues. The main issue is music playback, but just now when I tested my Pause screen in the game I'm working on, when I clicked on the menu item to go back to the main menu, my game went haywire.

Buggy Front-End Behaviour

 Hi msdos622wasfun,
Thank you for narrowing the problem down and letting us know about this.
We're away at a game jam at the moment but we will be onto these problems as soon as we're back on Monday.
Thanks again,
John

Okay, thanks. Sorry for spamming the forum with all these issues. Like you I just want the kit to function as well as possible.

I understand the functioning of the front-end system better now, so what I thought were issues at one point probably aren't anymore.

But when you can get a chance to investigate some of those problem areas, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your input

Thanks for your input Djio.

At this point it seems to me that the front-end system is working as it should with two exceptions:

1) Assigning the action to start a new game or continue an existing game (or return to the main menu) to a text item or sprite causes the music playback issues and other instability when clicked on.
2) If you fire to progress while viewing the main menu and also have fire to progress enabled with the story and instructions, those two screens will flash by really quickly as if they are skipped (they don't wait for individual fire presses). But then again I'm not sure what the intended behavior is here (that is, if it's supposed to be that way).

At the moment in my current game I redesigned it so the user hits the space bar to continue, so I'm avoiding these problems. But I'm sure Tall John will want to look into it.

Hi msdos622wasfun and Djio,

Thank you for letting me know about this. It's very helpful to have the problem broken down into the two specific problems.

As you've said, I will definitely be looking into it. :D

Thanks again,
John
