Hi,

Just wondering what Pop-up's are for. I can see that in the HUD editor you create them, give them a name, select some audio and fire to progress, and that they can be activated by triggers etc in the game.

So is that what they're for, to play a sound at certain points during the game?

Thanks,

Nick.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the question on pop-ups.

They are designed to display text and sprites, and play audio, based on an event. This allows text and graphics to appear when a player flies through a trigger, for example. Or display a warning if a timer expires and there are only a few seconds left to complete the level.

It can also be used to play back story events or dialogue using a timer. Characters can appear alongside text which describes what they are saying, and audio can be played. A few seconds later another pop-up can appear with another character's reply. This effect has been used in many games including the Star Fox series.

I hope you find this feature useful and if you have any questions then please let me know.

Thanks again,
John

Hi,

Thanks for that, they sound really useful. I'm just wondering how you set them up for text or a sprite though.

When I go to the HUD editor and select the pop up option, the window that opens only displays an option for audio, basically the window title is General, it has an option to provide a name (defaults to PopUp_0), under that is an option to select audio, then the pop up duration, then under that is the fire to progress check box.

Thanks

Nick.

Nope, I'm absolutely clueless on this!

The manual (page 76) doesn't offer up any info either.

Literally the only option I can see in the pop up options is for audio :(

Is there a tutorial on how to use them anywhere?

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,

I'm sorry you've been struggling with the pop-ups. We appreciate the user interface for this feature is a bit confusing.

We have created a wiki overview of the pop-up feature here:
http://tallstudios.com/wiki/index.php/Pop-Up

The Text and Sprite buttons should be working. They are the same buttons you use for creating HUD elements. We will think about ways of making it clearer that you're creating a pop-up. At the moment it displays a small notification in the top-left corner but we should really make the HUD items fade.

I'm sorry to say that we have found a crash bug if you return to edit an existing pop-up. This has been fixed now and the next update (including the v18 beta branch) will work properly. Sorry about this bug. But you can create new pop-ups.

I hope this tutorial is useful for you and I thank you for letting us know that documentation was needed for this feature.

Thanks again,
John

Ahhh I see! thanks for clearing that up :)

So when you're creating a pop up it's like a little "sub editor" of the hud editor - got it.

Just had a play and got it working. I encountered the bug too, when trying to re-edit an already existing pop up it crashes with an R6025 - pure function call error.

Do you know when the next beta branch will be ready?

Thanks again,

Nick.

Hi Nick,

I'm pleased the tutorial was useful but I'm sorry about the crash. This has been fixed now and the next beta update should be tomorrow.

I'll post here as soon as it is available.

Thanks again,
John

Hi Nick,

There is a new build in the beta-version-18 branch which fixes the issue with editing pop-ups.

I'm not sure if you're using the 2.0.18 beta already but if not then please back-up your projects as it uses a new project storage format.

If you have any questions or experience any problems then please let me know.

Thanks again,
John
